LEVEL 1

Construction materials.

Access to a printer.

Scissors and a pencil.

A piece of light, flexible card - try the boxes of loosely packed products such as cereal, pasta, detergent powders etc. It should be around 400gsm, which is 3-4 times the weight of standard printer paper. If you can't find any around the house you can simple buy a piece of card at your local art, stationary or office supplies store.

LEVEL TWO

Prepare for launch.

Print out your boomerang template and cut it out. This template should have opened in a new tab during player selection, but if you've lost it, click here to go back.

Using the template as a stencil, draw the shape of the boomerang onto the card then carefully cut it out.

Place your boomerang on a flat surface to check on which side the tips of the wings curve upwards slightly, then label the side facing up as the top. The process of cutting the boomerang out should have already given the wings a slight curve, lifting the tips up about 2-3mm, but you may need to accentuate it by gently bending the wings up a bit further.

With the top facing upwards and the dotted lines on the template as a reference, use the edge of a table to make slight, downwards folds on the trailing edge of each wing (about 15°).

LEVEL THREE

Send it into orbit!

Find an indoor space with a fairly high ceiling and at least 3-4 metres of space around you. If you can't find a space with a high ceiling then you can still simply sit down to throw instead.

Hold you boomerang gently between your forefinger and thumb, with the top facing inwards, towards you. Then outstretch you arm and aim your boomerang just above eye level.

Turn your body to 2 o'clock, then tilt your boomerang away from you to 1 o'clock.

Bend back your wrist so that your boomerang nearly touches your forearm, and then bend back your arm, bringing your boomerang to your ear.

Throw your boomerang directly at your aiming point and use a clap catch to catch it once it returns and spins below eye level. Continue on to see a demonstration video.

If something isn't working out quite right, you can either scroll back to up to check the steps or continue on for troubleshooting.

LEVEL FOUR

Houston, we have a problem.

First, check up on your boomerangs aerodynamics. The wings should curve upwards by about 2-3mm when placed topside up on a flat surface, and there should be slight, 15° folds on the trailing edge of each wing.

If your boomerang is landing too far to the left, then you need to aim your arm more to the right and vice versa.

If your boomerang isn't returning, you could be holding it upside down. Always check that the top is facing inwards, towards you.

If your boomerang isn't making it all the way back to you, you could be tilting your boomerang too much - tilt it out at a 1 o'clock (30°) angle and make sure you throw it at that angle too.

Where your boomerang lands also depends on how hard you throw it - too light and it won't make it all the way back, while too hard and it could fly right over your head.

Remember that practice makes perfect! Keep experimenting with different angles and throwing strengths to perfect your technique. Click the arrow to return to the top.
